Luxmeter

Lux measuring instruments, also known as illuminance meters, are available in a large number of versions and with various measuring functions.

The palette ranges from pure lux meters to true al-rounders.

But what does a lux meter do?

This device is used to measure illuminance. This physical unit indicates how bright it is at the measuring point, i. e. how much luminous flux of a light source falls on a surface. The further away the defined area is from the light source, the weaker the illuminance becomes.

Illuminance is the incedent luminous flux per illuminated surface and is expressed in lux (lat. light) or footcandles. Footcandle is the Anglo-Saxin measure of illuminance, abbreviated fc. One footcandle corresponds to 10,76 lux, one lux corresponds to 0,0929fc.

A silicon photodiode is often used as a measuring cell in the classic luxmeter. In some devices, the measuring cell also serves as a power supply, so that these devices function without an additional energy source.

The use of the lux measuring device is increasing in all areas of daily life. The measurement of light intensity is of great importance in commercial and industrial areas (topic: lighting at the workplace). Products in stores must be illuminated with the required lux number in order to create the best visual impression for the customer. The lux measuring instrument/lux meter is also used for this purpose.

How many Lux are appropriate?

For the lighting of indoor and outdoor workplaces there are guideline values derived from European standards.

"Illumination of indoor workplaces", EN 12464-1 (June 2011)
"Illumination of outdoor worklplaces", EN 12464-2 (October 2007)

Examples of indoor guidelines:

  • Break rooms: 100 Lux
  • Bakeries: 300-500 Lux
  • Study (office): 500 Lux, at least at the desk
  • Sales areas: 300 Lux
  • Classrooms, seminar rooms: 300 Lux
  • Lecture halls: 500 Lux
  • Corridors: 100 Lux
  • Examination rooms (general lighting): 500 Lux

Examples for outdoor guidelines:

  • Walkways, exclusively for pedestrians: 5 Lux
  • Parking spaces (low, medium, high traffic): 5, 20, 20 Lux
  • Covered platforms, long-distance traffic: 100 Lux
  • Construction sites (construction areas): 50 Lux

Luxmeter - more than just an illuminance meter

There are lux meters that are designed solely for measuring luminous intensity. However, there are also devices that are true all-round talents and equipped with extensive measurement parameters.
These include temperature, air pressure, sound, and humidity.
To make your decision a little easier, there is an overview of the respective functions of the all-round lux meter or the pure lux meter.
